Here’s what you could win!

  • Hyundai

Being the winner of our Best City Car and overall Car of the Year in our 2014 awards, the Hyundai i10 is deservedly at the top of this list. With the exception of air-con not being available on entry-level versions, the i10 comes with an impressive amount of standard-fit equipment. It also boasts a fairly large 252-litre boot for a car of this size, super-cheap running costs including road tax exemption for the most efficient models in the range. Factor in the five-year, unlimited mileage warranty, and you have the makings of a class-leading cheap car.

  • Skoda

Despite being identical in almost every way to the SEAT Mii and Volkswagen up!, it’s the Skoda Citigo we think is the best of the three. Though the statistics for fuel economy (at least 60mpg), boot space (251 litres), road tax (up to £20 per year) and Euro NCAP safety rating (the full five stars) are shared with the SEAT and Volkswagen, it’s options are cheaper and great customer satisfaction ratings seal the deal for us. Like the Mii and up!, the Citigo is available as a three or five-door car and as a number of special editions.

  • Seat

It really is a close-fought battle between the Citigo, Mii and up! family. The SEAT Mii scores for being the cheapest of the three, albeit by the slimmest of margins. Other than the starting price - a whole £15 less than the Skoda, there isn’t much the Mii offers over and above the other two. That does mean, though, you’re still left with a frugal, efficient and fairly practical little runabout that’s great fun to drive and cheap to run. Like the Citigo, the SEAT Mii is available in a roster of special editions, but in our Driver Power customer satisfaction manufacturers survey, SEAT performed poorly compared to Skoda.

  • Volkswagen

Though it ranks the lowest of the trio, the Volkswagen up! has plenty of perks over its cheaper siblings. The interior trim, for instance, is of a far higher quality compared to that in the Skoda Citigo and SEAT Mii, and the up!’s status as a Volkswagen means that it should be easy to sell on. It is worth pointing out, however, that experts say the extra cash you’ll spend on an up! versus a Citigo or Mii won’t necessarily be recouped when you come to sell.

  • Renault

The Renault Twingo is perhaps the quirkiest in this list. That's largely by virtue of its engine being in the back, which allows plenty of interior space and the ability to have an exceptionally tight turning circle. It's those cute looks which will lure many buyers though, something that's aided by a huge range of customisation options. There are two engines available: a 0.9-litre turbocharged engine and a 1.0-litre engine. Despite being smaller and more expensive, we recommend the 0.9-litre engine as it offers a little more performance.

  • Citroen

Choosing between the Citroen C1, Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo triplets is pretty tough. All three are competitively priced, cheap to run, good to drive and come with plenty of personalisation options. In the end, the final choice is really down to personal preference, though it is worth mentioning that Citroen dealers have been known to offer enticing discounts. C1 buyers can also (depending on which trim pack they’ve gone for) specify a rather novel reclining fabric sunroof. And it's because of that roof and a wider engine choice that it gets the nod ahead of the Aygo.
